Marathon Broadcast
Rugby Hospital Radio held a fund raising Marathon Broadcast from Friday 13
May to Sunday 15 May 2005. Presenters staffed the station around the clock
for 55 hours of non-stop music and chat..
Presenters produced special one-off programmes and some teamed up in pairs
for the late shifts. Requests were collected as normal on the Friday and
Sunday, but the Saturday evening programme covered the entire hospital
(around 150 beds) with an 'instant requests' format, with collectors passing
the patients choices up to the studio by walkie-talkie.
The event was opened by the Mayor of Rugby, Councillor Lionel Franklin and
there were also interviews with Chief Inspector Mak Chisty of Warwickshire
Police, Rugby Observer editor Chris Smith and hospital managing director Dr
Mark Newbold.
Several local businesses and many more members of the public donated money
to sponsor the event, which raised over £2,000. The money will be spent on
providing a 24 hour radio service.
